New Year's Eve!

It's New Year's Eve! 2009 brought us our little Lucy, so I can't say that it's been a bad year.....

Anyway, I've been sitting here for the past hour trying to think of some of the big, exciting things that have happened in 2009, and a way to make them funny and entertaining.... So much happened last year that it's hard to keep it all straight.... So instead of writing a blog with random list of mostly unfunny jokes about what happened in 2009, I'll leave you with a succinct, funny and complete recount of 2009 from JibJab.... I had to watch it a couple of times to see everything in the video....

Well, here's one thing.... Barack Obama was inaugurated as President of the United States.... Can you believe that it hasn't even been a whole year since he's been the President? It feels like he's been the President for the past ten years! See it could have been a whole post with jokes like that.... Don't worry, you can put away your drum set.... No rim shot today.

United State Of Pop 2009 - Blame It On The Pop

DJ Earworm is back! Don't let the name fool you, he's very talented.... Last year, he took every one of the songs from the Top 25 Billboard Hits in 2008 and made a Mashup with a video called the 'United State of Pop 2008 - Viva La Pop'.

He's at it again, taking ALL 25 songs from the Top 25 Billboard Hits in 2009 and made a Mashup with a video called the 'United State of Pop 2009 - Blame It On The Pop'. 25 songs, 25 videos, and somehow they all fit together in a flawless stream of artistic madness.

And here's the awesome video!

He's not paid to put these together, so you can download the music mashups from his site for free!

MVPuppets 10

I'm not quite sure where Nike plans to go with these MVPuppets commercials, but you've seen all of the other MVPuppets videos here..... Why not keep the tradition going.....

I understand the Kobe and LeBron relationship. Two of the best players in the NBA, both very popular and both polarizing figures.... The Kobe and LeBron puppet commercials are pretty funny, and I know you've been dying to find out who took LeBron's new shoes....

I'm not sure if I understand Nike's intentions with the Santa and Blitzen puppet commercials (Yes, I realize I'm a little late to the game with the Santa commercials).... I think someone had some extra puppet making material that he didn't know what to do with.... Who came up with the idea to make a menacing Santa and reindeer who want to throw down on the basketball court?

Upular Remix

Last month, I posted a 'Hook' remix video from a talented young DJ from Australia. He uses video clips and sounds from movies, and adds some synthesizers, drums and bass to make amazing remix videos, and he's created another awesome remix video from Pixar's movie 'UP'.

By the way, you should really see 'UP' if you haven't already.... And if you have seen 'UP', how good was the first 15 minutes of the movie?

By the way.... If you click on the banner below, it will take you directly to his YouTube channel where you can see the rest of his videos. Do yourself a favor and check them out.... They're awesome!

Classic Video Games For Christmas

Do you remember playing the Nintendo Entertainment System, Gameboy, or Sega games? There's a great emulator on the internet, there are hundreds of games for each system, and it's almost like playing the real thing....

If you love the old systems, give them
a try.... You won't be disappointed. There's nothing like playing Kid Niki, Metroid, Galaga or any of the original Mario Brothers games on the old 8-bit systems.... If you click on the Nintendo cartridge, it'll take you to the list of games to play on the Nintendo emulator.... If you click on the Gameboy cartridge, it'll take you to the list of games to play on the Gameboy emulator.... And so on, and so forth.... It's worth taking a little time this holiday weekend to check out the classics.... Merry Christmas Eve!

I tried entering the 'Konami Code' before I played Contra, unfortunately, it didn't work....

For A Limited Time Only

Another day, another drive to Fillmore, California and back.... I placed radon measurement canisters at an apartment complex on Monday, and today I have to go pick up the canisters and send them to the lab.... Two hours of driving there, and two hours back.... Did you know that, behind smoking, inhalation of radon gas is the second leading cause of lung cancer?

Anyway, back in February, I posted a blog about the Disney movie 'The Little Match Girl', based on the short story with the same name written by Hans Christian Anderson. It's a beautifully magical and tragic tale that I would recommend everybody watch.... And.... It's the perfect segue into today's topic.....

Animator Rodrigo Blaas, has taken some time off from his gig at Pixar to do some independent work. His first film, 'Alma', is fantastically beautiful and unbelievably creepy all at the same time.... While you're watching this, don't forget that it's created by one of the guys who helped animate 'Up' and 'Finding Nemo' (Have you seen the first fifteen minutes of 'Up' yet? I'm glad I was wearing the 3D glasses).... 'Alma' has won many awards, and Mr. Blaas has made it available to the public for a short time during the Christmas season.... Enjoy it, before it's taken away from us....

Lip Dub Battle

The 'Lip Dub' has become one of the hottest trends on YouTube.... The most popular 'Lip Dubs' include one person with one camera, in constant motion, shooting an unedited video of a group of people as they lip sync to a popular song (typically a different person sings each line...).

Trent Mitchell, the video production class teacher at Shorecrest High School in Shoreline, Washington, organized over 200 student to shoot a 'Lip Dub' video of the popular song 'Hey Ya' by Outkast.

Not to be outdone, Marty Ballew, the video production class teacher at Shorewood High School, Shorecrest's crosstown rival, organized over 500 students to shoot a 'Lip Dub' video of the oldie, but goodie, 'You Make My Dreams Come True' by Hall and Oates. Shorewood's video had a significant twist, the video was shot in reverse! Not only did they shoot the video in reverse, the students learned how to sing the song backwards! It's incredible! At the end of the Shorewood High School 'Lip Dub' video, a challenge is proposed: 'Try and beat that Shorecrest!'

Turns out, both teachers are childhood friends.... I can't wait to see what comes next!

Before They Were Stars Trivia - Answers

Did you know either of the answers? Well, If you didn't..... Here they are....

In 1973, Robin Williams and Christopher Reeve were the only two students accepted into Juilliard's Advanced Program.... Not only were they both in the Advanced Program, they were college roommates and lifelong friends....

Did you recognize the young child on Bill Cosby's knee? It's none other than superstar songstress Alicia Keys...

Way before she released her first album (2001), a four year old Alicia Keys, credited as Alicia Cook, attended Rudy's slumber party.

Before They Were Stars Trivia

I have to take a two hour drive (four hours round trip) to Fillmore, California to inspect a property today, so all I've got for you today are a couple of interesting trivia questions....

1. In keeping with Friday's Robin Williams theme.... In 1973, Robin Williams was one of approximately 2,000 students who auditioned for a spot in the prestigious Juilliard School of the Arts in New York City. Not only was Robin Williams one of only twenty students accepted into the freshman class, he was one of only two students accepted into Juilliard's Advanced Program. Who was the only other student accepted into Juilliard's Advanced Program with Robin Williams ?

2.
Can you identify the future superstar riding on Bill Cosby's knee?

By the way, it was very saddening to hear the news about Brittany Murphy yesterday..... Take a chance and check out the direct-to-dvd release 'Ramen Girl'. The movie was unexpectedly good....

Can You Guess This TV Theme? #27 - Answer

After the actor playing Mork gets frustrated and quits during a rehearsal during 'Happy Days', Garry Marshall allegedly sent his casting director to the Laugh Factory in Los Angeles to see a small comic named Jay Leno for the open role. The casting director saw Robin Williams perform and knew he was the person to introduce to Garry Marshall for the role of Mork the alien from Ork.....

Between the ad-libbing and his ability to make everybody laugh during his appearance on 'Happy Days' (I'm surprised 'Happy Days' didn't jump the Ork'), Garry Marshall pitches a Mork spinoff to ABC. ABC gave Marshall a shot, and cast Pam Dawber as Mindy, after seeing her in a shampoo commercial....

Alas, 'Mork and Mindy' was born.... Over four seasons, Mork absorbed Earth's cultures as his partner Mindy stumbled along for the ride....

Did you know that Robin Williams won a "Best TV Actor" Golden Globe for his role a Mork? Or that the house used in the show (still one of the most popular landmarks in Boulder, Colorado), was later used as the house where Larry and Balki settle down with their wives in the show 'Perfect Strangers', and was shown as the house that Myra (Steve Urkel's girlfriend) lived in on the show 'Family Matters'?

I would go into the whole Robin Williams having a cocaine habit, and his friend Jon Belushi's overdose and death cited as the reason Robin Williams quit using drugs (all of which happened during the Mork and Mindy's television run).... But that stuff is just too depressing.... Enjoy today's theme!

Can You Guess This TV Theme? #27

Sorry for the late post today.... It's been a bit of a hectic past couple of days....

Anyway..... This is a giveaway.... Everybody should know this theme.... Can You Guess This TV Theme?

Steve Is Back!

I'm a father of two, and Blue's Clues has played an integral part of my son's life.... I remember hearing the stories about the angry mothers and children who were upset by the departure of Steve Burns, and the installment of his replacement Donovan Patton (who played Steve's brother Joe)....

Well, Steve is back! We were watching Nick Jr. and the customary music video was playing between episodes, and Colleen screams out 'It's Steve! Steve from Blue's Clues!'. Sure enough, it was a bald Steve Burns with Steven Drozd of the Flaming Lips performing the song "I Hog The Ground (The Groundhog Song)".

R. Kelly Wants You To Have His Child

What is the first thing you think of when you hear the name R. Kelly?

Ok, scratch that, what's the second thing you think of when you hear the name R. Kelly? That's right..... Lyrical genius! His work of art, "Trapped In The Closet", was so hilariously awesome, that it can only be defined as a work of art.... If you've never seen "Trapped In The Closet", R. Kelly's 22-part (so far) hip-hopera, you have not lived..... He seamlessly intertwines a tale of adultery, mystery, and hilarity in a repetitive ballad that could only have come from the mind of R. Kelly. And if that doesn't sell it for you, R. Kelly does all the voices. The whole series is on YouTube, and you can see them all if you click on the picture below....

Back to the reason I'm writing this post..... R. Kelly has struck gold again with his new song "Pregnant" from his new album "Untitled". The song is performed by R. Kelly with Tyrese and Robin Thicke, and it's horribly good.... It's so crazy and catchy, as is R. Kelly's style, that if you're as big of a fan of train wrecks as I am (e.g. Kevin Federline and VH1 Reality Shows) you will enjoy this song as much as I did.... It's so damn catchy that I find myself singing the song in my car, in my office, at the bank, at the grocery store.... It wouldn't be so bad if the lyrics weren't "Girl, you make me want to get you pregnant." So, without further adieu, ladies and gentlemen, I present to you:

"Pregnant" by R. Kelly, Tyrese and Robin Thicke:

Welcome To The Heart Land

I don't know why, but I really like this picture....

Gulf War Game Boy

Here's another vintage Nintendo item! This Nintendo Game Boy belonged to a soldier in the 1990 - 1991 Gulf War. The Game Boy was damaged when the barracks the soldiers were staying in were bombed. The damaged Game Boy still works and is running Tetris while perpetually plugged in at the Nintendo World Store in New York City!

Konami Code

If you're a video game nerd who grew up in the 80's like I am, you've played "Contra" for the Nintendo Entertainment System? It was one of the best games ever created by the Konami Company. You start the game with only three lives, however, if you enter a secret code during the title screen, you start the game with 30 lives. This code, known as the Konami Code, makes the game much easier..... It goes a little something like this....

Up, Up, Down, Down, Left, Right, Left, Right, B, A

Apparently, there are many sites on the internet where you can enter the Konami Code to see special effects appear on the screen. If you enter the code while on Facebook, followed by Enter, a photo lens flare appears anywhere you click or type.... It's totally unnecessary, but I can't stop finding out what entering the code does to other sites..... There's a full list of sites where the Konami Code is known to work at KonamiCodeSites.com.... Click on their banner below to go to their site, and to see the approximately 90 sites where this code works (and the list is growing)..... However, I must warn you, you better know the code before you go to their site....

Scooby Doo, Where Are You?

I've got some sad news.... Aaron Schroeder passed away on December 2, 2009, after a long battle with Alzheimer's Disease.

You may know him as the man who wrote songs for Elvis Presley, Roy Orbison, Sammy Davis Jr. and Nat King Cole..... The songs written for Elvis include the number one hits "It's Now Or Never" and "Stuck On You"....

Or you may know him as the man who is credited with helping the young careers of Jimi Hendrix and Barry White....

But this song is his pièce de résistance.... His brightest star amongst a vast universe of adequately bright stars.....

MVPuppets 9

They're back! The Kobe Bryant and LeBron James MVPuppets are back in two new commercials, including a multi-part cliffhanger that will be continued in future commercials.... The new commercials aren't as funny as last year's batch of MVPuppets commercials with Kobe Bryant and LeBron James, and they seem to be geared more toward product placement than promoting the rivalry between the two superstars. Even so, they're worth watching....

Can You Guess This TV Theme? #26 - Answer

You guessed it! I thought 'Benson' was going to be one of the tougher shows to guess! Of course all of you know that Robert Guillaume, the star of 'Benson', played Benson DuBois, a character spinoff from his butler character in the sitcom 'Soap'. A cornucopia of hijinks ensued as he endured comical relationships with boss, Governor Gatling and his family, the governor's aides, and Miss Gretchen, as he climbed the ladder all the way to earn the post ofLieutenant Governor.

Did you know that Robert Guillaume was the voice of Rafiki in the Lion King movies?

'Benson' was the first show to demonstrate the use of the internet.... The computer network they were accessed was the ARPANET, which was an internet prototype used by the United States military and government.

Jerry Seinfeld's first on-screen performance was his 3 episode arc as 'Frankie' on 'Benson'! Maybe that was his inspiration for naming the main character 'Barry B. Benson' in the animated movie 'Bee Movie', which Jerry Seinfeld wrote and voiced the main character....

Did you know, that for his role in 'Benson', Robert Guillaume is the only African American to ever have won an Emmy for 'Best Actor In A Comedy Series'?

A Barbershop Quartet / One Man Band

Apparently multitrack video recordings have been on YouTube for at least a year now, but I just figured out they exist, and I think they're awesome! It's usually one or two guys, recording themselves singing each part of a four to eight part harmony.... So, as is customary, here's what I think is interesting..... At least I can stop searching for three more guys to start a Barbershop Quartet with me.... I look awesome in red and white stripes.

Hug Your Mom Today - Christmas Shoes

It's almost Christmas, and to keep with the "Hug Your Mom" theme, I thought I'd post this song....

I know I'm a big girl, but I have to change the station every time the "Christmas Shoes" song by Newsong comes on the radio before I turn into a big weepy princess....

Anyway, here you go.... Enjoy....

Hug Your Mom Today - Reddit Photoshop Kindness

Here's a beautiful story of human and internet kindness...... Reddit.com user, Elmstreeter, reached out to the Reddit community for a little help after he had recently lost his mother to cancer...... All he wanted was help from someone with photoshop experience to remove the oxygen tubes him mother was wearing in the last picture of the two of them together....

Here's his request:

"My mother died of cancer yesterday. This is the last picture of us together and I wondered if anyone with mad Photoshop skills could touch up the picture and remove the oxygen cannula. I would greatly appreciate anyone who could be of assistance.

PS Hug your mom today"

Well, the Reddit community came out in droves, and here's the wonderful result....

Can You Guess This TV Theme? #25 - Answer

Jason and Maggie Seaver, played by Alan Thicke and Joanna Kerns, tried to run a tight ship as the Seaver family tried to survive everyday life on 'Growing Pains'. Their children, Mike, Carol, Ben, Crissy and Luke, played by Kirk Cameron, Tracey Gold, Jeremy Miller, Ashley Johnson and Leonardo DiCaprio, made life a handful.

Of course you all remember that Luke, a young Leonardo DiCaprio, was a homeless character who was taken in by the Seavers as a last ditch effort to save ratings....

And you all remember Mike Seaver's best friend, Richard 'Boner' Stabone....

Did you know that Kirk Cameron and Candace Cameron, Mike Seaver on Growing Pains and DJ Tanner from Full House, are a brother and sister duo who both had hit shows on around the same time, and they both made cameos in each other's respective shows? Also, both are devout born-again Christians....

Also, Chelsea Noble, and who played Kate MacDonald (Mike Seaver's love interest)(and celebrates her birthday today), and Kirk Cameron (Mike Seaver) are actually married in real life.... They've been married for 18 years now....

Tracy Gold (Carol Seaver) suffered from anorexia and did not appear in many of the final season episodes due to a hospital stay....

Jeremy Miller (Ben Seaver) was stalked by an older man who wrote letters detailing his plans to 'rape and kill' him.... The stalker revealed his home address on one of the letters and was subsequently arrested and sent to prison....

If you've never seen the three episode arc with Matthew Perry as 'Sandy', do yourself a favor and find it, because it's seriously heartbreaking....

I've Weaned Myself

I know I've suckled at the Tiger Woods teat here before on my blog, but this whole thing is so skeevy.... It's just yucky.... I don't even want to watch him play golf anymore....

Along the same lines, I have heard a couple good Tiger Woods jokes, that I'm sure you probably heard already, but if you haven't you'll probably get a good chuckle....

"What's the difference between a golf ball and an SUV?

Tiger Woods can drive a golf ball more than 300 yards!"

"Did you hear that Tiger Woods is changing his name?

Yeah.... He'll be called 'Cheetah' from now on...."

"Tiger Woods is so rich that he owns a lot of expensive cars. Now he has a hole in one."

Anyway, I've posted some amazing hole-in-one videos before, and this one is equally as awesome.... It's tradition for professional golfers to skip their ball across the water during their practice round before the Masters Tournament at the 16th hole of Augusta National Golf Course.

During his practice round, Vijay Singh skipped the ball across the water four times, before it rolled up onto the green and into the hole....

Give It A Ponder With James Lipton

James Lipton, host of "Inside The Actor's Studio", stars in these great 'Give It A Ponder' commercials from LG Phones. It's really weird seeing him without his 'beard of wisdom'. Plus, for some reason, it fascinates me to hear James Lipton talk about another man's 'junk' and imitate fighting cats.... Speaking of cats, here's the best trivia tidbit EVER!!!! James Lipton composed the theme for the cartoon show 'Thundercats'!

All Together Now

I'm a little late to the game with this, but I love this commercial! Budweiser hired advertising agency DDB UK to create a commercial to promote their product in the United Kingdom (probably to try to take a little bit of the market share from Guinness)....

The commercial is set to the Beatles song, “All Together Now,” covered by the band The Hours. It reportedly took the Beatles less than six hours (all in one day) to record "All Together Now" at Abbey Road Studios in London

The filming of this commercial took director Chris Palmer and his crew more than 50 hours over 5 days.... With all the film being shot from an elevated train circling downtown Chicago.... Try to see if you can spot all the visualized lyrics. I didn't see the 'C' or the 'H' the first time I watched the video....

We Have Nothing To Fear

Gay marriage was voted down in the New York Senate this afternoon with a vote of 38 to 24, as New York state lawmakers rejected a bill that would have made same-sex marriage legal in the state of New York. Senator Diane Savino of Staten Island gave a wonderfully eloquent speech on the floor of the Senate in support of the Marriage Equality bill. Why do we support the mockery of the sanctity of marriage with shows like 'The Bachelor' or 'The Bachelorette', yet we can't support a man loving a man or a woman loving a woman? What are we afraid of?

Merry BetamaXMas!

Do you wax nostalgic and remember the days when your entire family would crowd around the single small television set during the holidays to watch Christmas specials?

San Francisco designer Jeffery Bennett put together an archive of the classic holiday clips from the 1970s and ’80s and presents them on a old-fashioned, rabbit-eared television set in front of a wood-paneled backdrop.

As you flip through the channels with the on-screen controller, you'll find holiday clips from classics such as Perfect Strangers, Christmas Eve on Sesame Street, Growing Pains, Facts of Life (with George Clooney), and the Animated He-Man and She-Ra Christmas Special. I love seeing all the old Christmas commercials from my youth...

Go check it out now by clicking on the television in the picture.... I guarantee you will not be disappointed....
